We support the work of the Lazarus Home for Girls in Bethany
There are so many children in the Holy Land who have experienced nothing in their lives but fear, hunger, pain and loneliness. The decades of violence and upheaval have taken away from so many children the safety and security all children should have. Families have been torn asunder, plunged into poverty, or destroyed. The children who survive are often forced to live by begging, to sleep in the streets, or to live somehow in circumstances no child should have to know.
In the area of Bethany, there are some people who are giving these children food and shelter, an education and, most importantly, love. These people run the Lazarus Home for Girls.
The local Jeel Al Amal boys home cares for homeless and destitute boys in Bethany. However, because of local customs, girls could not be accepted with the boys, meaning that brothers and sisters were separated. Both had to be sheltered, fed and cared for, and so the Lazarus Home for Girls was begun in a rented flat.
There are over thirty girls cared for in the Lazarus Home for Girls, far more than the current accommodation can cope with, and which prevents any more girls being taken in. The Lazarus Home for Girls now need a new purpose-built home, and this is the project the Friends of the Lazarus Home for Girls have undertaken.
