SUMMER 2009A letter from the Chair of TrusteesDear Friends, The good folks of Bethany need more than ever our prayers at this time of uncertainty; but, as always, we found Samar to be very positive and full of ideas! Seeing the building was a joy but we were acutely aware of the work, which needs to be one to complete the project. When we receive estimates for completion, we hope we will be in a position to proceed as soon as possible. Meanwhile, we value your prayers and support for our Charity. Once again may I, on behalf of the trustees and management committee, thank you for all you have done and given to enable us to come this far. God Bless. Construction ReportFollowing my visit with our chair Kevin Dunne in June 2009: as always, it was good to actually witness the progress that had been achieved since my last visit, the completion of all the pointing to external walls and the waterproofing of the roof, which has now made the building watertight. However, due to the lack of financial funds at this point in time further construction work has now been put on hold until funds become available. As I have mentioned previously, the next stage of construction is the installation of all the external doors and window frames. Although the charity has to date has raised 50% of the total cost, it is not frugal to place an order until the total finance has been raised, as this would achieve the best positive value. My main purpose of my visit in June was to introduce our chair Kevin Dunne and Alistair McCabe of McCabe Pilgrimages to the charity's appointed architect Ibraham Younan and to visit the new home to witness the charity's progress to date. As you are aware, McCabe Educational Trust and McCabe Pilgrimages have in the post contributed to the furtherment of the construction work and have indicated that they would like to assist the charity in 2009-2010. Kevin and I will be attending a meeting with Mc Cabe Trust in early September 2009 to discuss a way forward. During our visit, Ibraham arranged a meeting with Dr Jawad Naji, the advisor to the Prime Minister for Arab and Islamic Funds Affairs and his staff. The meeting was arranged to further the charities grant application for the supplying of domestic appliances and household equipment including play items for the children. This grant would evaluate from $180.000 to $200.000. Our treasurer has now compiled the necessary documentation and forwarded out to Ibrahim in Jerusalem. Clinic ReportI thought I would like to share with you all this recent email I received from Marta giving a update on what is happening with regards to the clinic... as the funds are not available to finish the building work in the new home this step has been taken as a temporary measure in order to take advantage of the grants and ministry of Health involvement in the long term opportunities for the clinics. Dear Alan, Sponsorship NewsYou may recall the words of our chair's visit to the home in November 2008. We quote: "I have just returned from the Holy Land, where I witnessed the arrival of latest girl to come into the fold of the Lazarus Home. The girl is about 3 years of age. She was abandoned onto the streets, covered in bruises and her milk teeth had been knocked out. A beautiful innocent baby girl, a girl who truly symbolises the reason and need for the new home."
On joining the scheme, you will automatically receive our pack with all the latest news and periodic updates on the achievements of the girls. There is no stipulation in the giving of funds that is your decision; you can either give monthly, half yearly or annually. You can give as an individual or as a group: the choice is yours. Every donation received goes to the children the charities trustees pay their own expenses and the charities running costs so you can be assured your donations do make a difference to these tender young lives. For further information please contact us Treasurers ReportDuring this difficult climate of uncertainty your continued support and charitable giving overwhelms the charities trustees. To date, the building fund has reached £55,000.00. This amount does not include the grant of £25.000, which is isolated for the clinic, and the quarterly £3,000.00 funds from the sponsorship scheme for the benefit of the children. We all extend to you our deepest gratitude, as without your help we would not be able to assist Samar and the girls. ROLE OF HONOUR 80th Birthday Celebrations raise £1000+ for the building fund Congratulations go to St Paul’s Church Winlaton, who raised £150.00 from their coffee morning. Well done to all who achieved this wonderful amount in aid of the building fund. Our grateful thanks are extended to Joyce and Dorothy Sisterson who withstood the elements at Seaton Sluice Harbour Day to raise funds for the charity. Joyce and Dorothy are always ready and willing to participate in any activity the charity hosts in raising funds. Two quite unassuming ladies who really deserve a 'pat on their back' for all their good works. Well Done Girls: we really appreciate all that you do in the charities name. Dates for your diary8 to 10 September 2009 sees Philip Welsh competing in the Coast to Coast Ride from Whitehaven in Cumbria, finishing at Tynemouth North Tyneside, covering a distance of approx 80 miles in aid of the building fund. David Attfield EASTER NEWSLETTER 2009CHRIST IS RISEN, HE IS RISEN INDEED ALLELUIA A letter from the Chair of TrusteesDear Friends, We now have to find the funds to complete the internal work so that it won't be too long before the girls move into their new home. In the current financial clime, we seem to have a struggle ahead of us, but our feeling is that the Lord has brought us thus far, and it is He who will take us further. We have every confidence that the remaining funds will come soon. Meanwhile, we continue to hold Samar, her staff and all the girls in our prayers, especially in the current political climate in which they are living. Thank you once again for being alongside us in our vision for The Lazarus Home for Girls. God Bless. Progress Report on the Construction of the New Lazarus Home in BethanyNovember 2008 Unless the Lord builds the house its labours build in vain. Although it has only been a short while since I last updated you all on the progress of the new building, which is situated in Bethany Village, further progress has now been achieved thanks to the generosity of our supporters an a grant which has assisted the charity in the furthering of the construction of the new home. The charity's architect, Ibrahim Younan, has now been instructed by the charity to carry out the water proofing of the roof to the third floor. This will now make the building watertight. Work has also commenced on the external pointing and polishing of the external stonework to the total building; it is estimated this work should be completed by the end of March 2009. As you will see from the photographic evidence, this work has totally changed the appearance of the building. Quotations have now been received from the architect for the installation of all the external doors, frames, windows, and window shutters (the shutters will keep the building cool during the summer months when the temperatures are at there highest, as well as providing security for the home.) Once funds have been raised to achieve this goal work will then commence on the final stage of the fitting out of the internal building. This will enable the girls and staff to move into the home. Clinic Update: as previously mentioned in the Christmas Newsletter, the formation of the clinics to the ground floor to accommodate Paediatric and Gynaecology Clinics would provide benefits for the local community in Bethany Village. As medical insurance is not accessible to everyone these clinics would reach those who have the least potential of gaining medical assistance. The clinics totally depend on the charity achieving grant funding. As our treasurer has previously informed our supporters, a grant application had been made and, although this grant has been partially successful in achieving a 25% of the funds required, there are terms and conditions on the use of the funds received. Terms and conditions by our benefactor have placed strict stipulations on the use of the funds for mechanical installation, air conditioning, and sanitary ware only. These strict stipulations cannot be achieved until the construction of the internal of the building and further grant applications become available. Once again may I personally thank you all for your constant support and prayers, which is enabling the charity to achieve the completion of this much needed home. Thanks be to God Treasurer's ReportAs Alan Anderson has mentioned in his update report, the charity has been successful in achieving 25% of the clinic grant. This evaluates to £25,000.00, which will be isolated in the accounts until such time as the charity can comply with the strict terms and conditions of the grant funding. The charity's annual Gala Dinner Dance was a tremendous success, our grateful thanks go to Foxx Boy Band, whose entertainment made the night a lively event. To date funds raised from this event are in the region of £16,00.00. Praise the Lord. Our grateful thanks also extend to Denis Metcalf at Sainsburys Store Whitley Bay, who had his 25-year-old moustache shaved off in the middle of the store. This was to the alarm of his wife who had never seen Denis clean-shaven. £60.00 was raised for the building fund. For those of you who might think this is a drastic way of raising funds I am pleased to say a new moustache has now grown back. Further funds raising events together with your most generous donations, now stand in access £50,0000.0 this amount does not include the isolated grant. A personal thank you to all who have responded to our appeal for sponsors the funds raised from this scheme allows the charity to forward out quarterly International Standing Orders which evaluate to £12.000.00 per annum. These funds provide food, clothing, and educational and medical fees. If you want to join our scheme or if you would like to receive further information please contact us. Finally, just to reiterate, every donation received goes to the children. The trustees meet their own personal expenses and the charity's running costs. David Attfield CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER 2008Wishing you all a blessed Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. A letter from the Chair of TrusteesAGM November 2008 I have recently seen photographs of the new building, which were taken earlier this month. One of them shows a Mustard Plant growing just outside the entrance, and my mind went to the words of Jesus as recorded in Matthew's Gospel. The disciples were becoming a little downhearted with their ministry and asked Jesus why more things weren't happening. Jesus went on to tell them that it was because of their lack of faith. He then went on to say to them 'if you have faith as small as a mustard seed ... nothing will be impossible for you.' Isn't that the story of our charity? All along, we have had faith and trust that the Lord would complete what He started - and the building is nearly finished! Praise God! It seems that in that photograph, the Lord is saying to us 'See what faith can do!' Since our last AGM, the building work has been progressing well; thanks to the hard work and diligence of our Architect, Ibrahim. However, we still have much to do - as we will hear soon. Meanwhile, what we will hear today has only been possible through the faith, trust and support of many people. Our treasurer will be telling us about the amazing generosity of so many. It is to everyone that I would like to record my thanks on behalf of the Trustees and Committee members. The Lord has brought us this far and I know He will take us further. We would therefore value your continuing prayers as we seek to complete the work, which has begun. PS: I have just returned from the Holy Land where I witnessed the arrival of latest girl to come into the fold of the Lazarus Home. The girl is about 2 years of age. She was abandoned onto the streets, covered in bruises and her milk teeth had been knocked out. A beautiful innocent baby girl, a girl who truly symbolises the reason and need for the new home. I always recall Matthew 25-40 NAS ('I was hungry; did you feed Me? I was naked; did you clothe Me? I was sick: did you care for Me? For if you did… you did it for Me). Words that ring so true to the work the Lord has laid onto all our hearts. God Bless you all. Progress report: on the construction of the New Lazarus Home for Girls in BethanyNovember 2008 Unless the Lord builds the house its labours build in vain. Following my October 2008 visit to the new Lazarus Home for Girls, which has now been constructed, I would like to reflect what has transpired over the last 17 months. How the Lord has blessed and crowned all our efforts in His Name. You may recall it was only May 2007 when I was privileged to witness the breaking of the ground with our appointed architect Ibrahim Younan. From the excavation of over 4000 cubic metres of rock and earth in order to start construction of the basement and ground floor, to the stage when my February 2008 visit witnessed this work being completed. In April 2008 the construction of the first floor was completed. At this point in time the charity was under the assumption that work would have to come to a standstill until further funds become available. Wow, what an amazing heavenly Father we all have His great outpouring of faithfulness allowed the project to proceed and, to date the construction of the second and third floors has now been completed - Praise the Lord. Funding has also become available to commence the pointing of the external stonework, the waterproofing of the roof and the installing of some of the windows to the lower floors. You may recall in the summer 2008 newsletter that the charity has made a funding application for assistance in fitting out part of the ground floor to formulate a two-room clinic to provide health care for the local population. At the present time the application is still live and the charity is still awaiting a decision. It has now been agreed by the trustees the main priority is to vacate the existing (4 rented apartments), which presently house the girls and staff. The architect’s instruction is now to concentrate on providing costings for the partial fitting out of the ground floor, and the fully fitting out of the first and second floor to accommodate the present number of girls and staff. The other floors will be put on hold until funds become available. It is estimated the cost of this work will be in the region of £450,000 depending on the rate of exchange (at the time of processing.) During my October 2008 visit I attended a meeting with our architect and a representative of the Islamic Bank, to discuss the availability of funding for fixtures and fittings, these items range from kitchen utensils electrical equipment soft furnishing and furniture to name but a few, the cost will be between $130,000 to $180.000 An application has now been made via our architect, funds are available and the charities application has a 95% chance of success. Prayers Please. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity of personally thanking each and every one of you for your prayers and support. Thanks be to God Treasurer's ReportThe charity has experienced what can only be described as an amazing year. International payments forwarded for the construction of the new home totalled £251.000.00 Praise the Lord. This vast amount was raised from donations, grants and on going fund raising events. A very big 'Thank You' to you all, for your constant support and the wonderful letters, which tell of your fundraising efforts. (Due to the data protection act I am not at liberty to release this information, but if you wish to have a mention in our newsletters, drop me a line giving the charity permission to release your data and I will only be to please to include you in the next edition.) Ongoing quarterly International payments of £3000.00 from the charities sponsorship scheme are forwarded out to the home for the up-keep of the girls. 'Well Done' to Floyd Evans, Senior Doctors Referral Instructor Concordia Leisure Centre Cramlington, Northumberland, who raised £3,500.00 when he donned the charity's tee shirt and ran the Great North Run’s 13.1 mile race. Even after a fall, Floyd mastered on to complete the run in 1 hour, 47 minutes. We all wish to extend to you, Floyd, our profound gratitude for all that you have achieved in the charities name. Thank you . Finally, just to reiterate: every donation received goes to the children; the trustees meet their own personal expenses and the charity's running costs. David Attfield SUMMER 2008A Letter from the Chair of TrusteesOnce again, may I personally thank you all for your prayers and support for our charity. I am delighted to report that the building work is progressing well, Praise the Lord! The basement, ground, first and second floors are now completed and work is progressing on third and final floor. We are fast running out of funds but are confident that the Lord, having brought us this far, will enable us to complete the project. Already we are in talks with two major sponsors who, it seems, will pay for the equipping and fitting out of a much-needed clinic at ground floor level, and we have another promise of possible funding for a complete floor! Having said all this, we desperately need new sponsors to help us meet day-to-day costs for feeding and educating the girls. We have promised to send out a monthly equivalent of £1,000, and currently we are struggling to achieve this (we are required under charity laws to keep the building funds separate). Every penny we raise goes directly to the Lazarus Home for Girls. All expenses and running costs are met by the Trustees. Please pray for us as we urgently seek to complete the project. If you can provide us with further financial help, either by sponsoring on a monthly basis, or a one-off donation towards the building (or both!), we would love to hear from you. Meanwhile we would appreciate your continuing prayers. God Bless. Kevin Dunne Chair News from the HomeOur grateful thanks go to McCabe Travel who organised this summer event. Volunteer teachers spent the summer with the children at the homes in Bethany. Here is an extract from one of their reports: I am sure Panna and Hafsa will write more, but things here are also going really well. Sponsorship NewsKeep ahead of all the news at the Lazarus home by joining our sponsorship scheme. On joining the scheme, you will automatically receive our pack with all the latest news and periodic updates on the achievements of the girls. Funds raised from the scheme assist the charity in sending out a quarterly International Standing Order of £3000.00 towards the food, clothing, and educational and medical fees. There is no stipulation in the giving of funds. That is your decision: you can either give monthly, half yearly or annually. You can give as an individual or as a group, the choice is yours. For further information please contact us Construction ReportBy the time you will receive this Summer 2008 issue, the shell of the third and final floor will be completed. This will include the retaining wall to the rear of the home, which is over 10m high. You may recall that work commenced in May 2007 and the completion of the shell, with your prayers and financial help, has only taken 15 months to achieve Praise the Lord. I will be visiting the new home and our appointed architect early October 2008 to establish the cost of the fitting out of the interior in order to relocate Samar and girls into the new home. However, this will all determined by the financial situation of the charity. Our priorities are the fitting out of the first and second floors, which will consist of bedroom accommodation and dining facilities for the staff and children. The charity has now applied to a major charity for a grant for the fitting out of two clinics, one paediatric and one gynecologic, which will be situated on the ground floor of the new building. These clinics will be available to the local community in Bethany. An award from Kenda was jointly awarded to the Friends and Samar.
